Dramatic fictions are always interested in unhappy families, just remember the Atroids. Perhaps because, to paraphrase Tolstoy, happy families have nothing particular about them, whereas every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. "Crisis" and "miscommunication" are key words to access Joseph the Father, the last chapter (after Mary the Mother and Jesus the Son) of The Holy Family trilogy, Elmano Sancho's long-running project. "There is always imminent violence in the family," believes the playwright, actor and director. "Because it's the most intimate space we have, and with intimacy comes love, but also violence." José, an old and unemployed actor, renounces the role of father, a victim of a world that demands new forms of authority. But Joseph - where the figures of God the Father and the Devil converge - does not give up his place. José, the Father puts into tension the archetypes of patriarchal culture and the relationships between art/performance and religion/ritual.
