Colonial War Museum was born in 1999, through a partnership between the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the Armed Forces Handicapped Association and the Infante D. Henrique School, based on a pedagogical project entitled “Colonial War, a story to tell”.
More than a museum, this is a place aimed at giving visitors a vivid knowledge of this period in Portuguese history, told by those who lived and experienced it firsthand.
The permanent exhibition describes the itinerary of the Portuguese combatant in the Colonial War (1961-1974), addressing the themes of Departure; Everyday Life; Military Operations; The Natives; Social and Psychological Actions; Religiosity; The Horrors of War; The Wounds of War; Death; Correspondence and the War Godmothers.
The entire collection was given or donated by former combatants or their families, various branches of the Armed Forces Disabled Veterans Association and the Portuguese Armed Forces.
The visitor will also be able to see the objects used by our Military, such as War Chests (personal belongings, food, clothing), Military Uniforms and Equipment (transmission towers, parachutes, helmets, weapons), and War Vehicles.

Mission
To promote the understanding of the history and impact of the colonial war on a personal, national and international dimension, with an emphasis on human experience.

Objectives
1. To promote awareness regarding the values of peace and nonviolence;
2. To value the memory of the colonial war in the individual and collective context;
3. To consistently increase the museum’s collection;
4. To disseminate knowledge about the collection;
5. To promote the museum as an effective, responsible and transparent institution in the transmission of the “colonial war” theme.
