Castro Alves Foundation, established by Commander Manuel Castro Alves, has its origins in the former Center for Popular Art and Culture of São Pedro de Bairro. Its activities are centered on three areas: School of Music (1971), School/ Workshop of Artistic Ceramics (1979) and Ceramic Art Museum, which was inaugurated in 1987.
Architect Fernando Lanhas is the author of the museum building and its museological project. An innovative project for the time, but still considered a reference museum space today, due to its strong pedagogical nature.
The Museum is closely connected to the Ceramic Art School / Workshop, indeed, the collection consists of thousands of pieces created in that school by many young people under the guidance of great motivators and teachers as the painters Júlio Resende and Francisco Laranjo, the potter Fernando Sousa and the architect Fernando Lanhas himself.
More than a simple museum, this is a place where popular culture is present everywhere in the displayed pieces.
