Besides its determinant role in the local economy, Commerce is also linked to the common memory of the population. It translates into the materialization of the territory's identity, which, in the case of Famalicão, is very rich. The commercial activity has long been part of Famalicão's genetics, since the early days of the great fairs, a reference in the region, through the various cafés and taverns, the pharmacies, hardware shops, fabrics, among others, some of which still exist.

In order to preserve and promote the establishments that fit the terms of the specific legislation, the City Council recognises the interest of several entities of local historical and cultural or social interest, through the municipal programme "Comércio com História". This programme joins the national inventory promoted by the Directorate-General for Economic Activities, and consequently the recognised establishments benefit from the protection measures provided for in Law no. 42/2017, of 14 June.

Other establishments that fit the criteria for recognition of local historical, cultural or social interest, provided for in the Municipal Regulations for Urbanisation and Building, can apply.
