In many Portuguese villages, Christmas and Janeiras ("Singing of the Kings") are a time of rituals and important cultural aspects that have not been lost yet: traditional instruments are played, such as the sarronca, and songs are sung to the Baby Jesus or to welcome the New Year. Come cold, rain or snow, the party takes place in the street, from house to house and in the churchyard, by the heat of the bonfire.
