In the kitchen, no matter how small, you can always fit one more. In the kitchen, smells are memories; gestures are an archive of the body. The kitchen is where everyone wants to be, even when there's nothing to do. In the kitchen, - get in there and I'll be right there - generations meet, - get out of here, you're getting in my way - ancient secrets are learnt, - don't remove that, you'll ruin my stew - and care is practised, - get going, I'll be right there. The kitchen can be any place where people meet and share, like the theatre.
In “I'm not like the fig tree”, three generations of women meet while a soup is cooking. They are each other's sisters, mothers, daughters, nieces and aunts. Between conversations that are like cherries, the communication of an unexpected decision is being prepared. In that kitchen full of so many different women, every way of looking at the world fits.
