On the bloody banks of the River of Gold, a ballad of jealousy, a great and horrible crime set in a popular neighbourhood. An old couple gets married. She is a gatekeeper, he's the boss of the dredging boat. Mélita, his niece, falls into the river, screams for help, António saves her. Carolina is jealous. On a train, a rather clairvoyant gypsy, Zé dos Ouros, wants to sell Mélita a necklace. Alas, he sees the innocent girl's past: in a previous life she killed her lover and painted his bedroom with his blood. Terrified, Zé flees. Carolina goes after him, steals his necklace and ends up becoming his mistress. She wants the gypsy to unravel his secret and explain what he saw. Whilst old António becomes more and more attracted to his niece, Carolina dreams and sees everything red with blood. Zé is no longer afraid of Mélita, he wants to leave his lover. The guard feels betrayed by everyone, she sees a big knife in front of her...
